Over the July 4th<\/sup> weekend (yes, I am really that backed up on content) we got invited over to a friends house for a casual hang. I decided that this would be a good time to try a re-do on the \u201cChocolate Dream Dessert Pastry\u201d which was the source of my first Blog Fail <\/a>back in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After making this again, it really does baffle me how I messed it up so badly the first time around. Sure, it was not as photogenic as when my mom would make it, but, it was not a massive fail like the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occasionally I do learn from my mistakes. For Step 1 this time, I used an appropriate sized food processor to make the base. This is the most time consuming part of the entire recipe. It has to bake and then cool completely before moving on to the rest of the recipe. Remembering that usually my mom would do this step well in advance, I planned ahead (rare) and made this base the day before so that I did not have to worry about rushing the rest of the steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third layer (Step 3) was where everything went wrong on the last attempt. This time there were no problems. I did use a manual whisk this time (instead of my electric hand mixer) to make the pudding. Maybe this was the key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final verdict on this was that it turned out pretty good. Nobody at the gathering (that I know of) got sick from it. It serves 12-16, so, Danny and I had leftovers for almost an entire week. It was something that my mom only made for special occasions (my birthday) and I understand why. Even though it is not that complex it makes a huge mess (or at least it did in my kitchen) and getting the timing right on the first layer is kind of a pain. Will I make it again? Yes. Will it be something I make more than once or twice a year? No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
